What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, representing a form of almsgiving and religious tax. It is calculated as 2.5% of a Muslim's total savings and wealth above a minimum amount known as Nisab.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have before they are obligated to pay Zakat. It is equivalent to the value of 3 ounces of gold or 21 ounces of silver.
When is Zakat Due?
Zakat becomes obligatory when a Muslim's wealth reaches the Nisab threshold and has been held for a full lunar year (Hawl). It must be paid annually.
